Due to the fact that we get hit with a dozen or more spammer requests to join the forum each day, we have gone back to the requirement that all new members be approved before they can post. We also automatically delete any username requests like, "viagra4U," or "cheapmeds4all," so try to pick a username that does not fall into this category. [;#)] If you are from Russia, India or Africa you will need to email us to join as we delete any membership requests from these countries as most spammers seem to have email addresses from these places.
If you go through the membership process and can't post in a day or so, please send us an email with your username and a password and we will set things up for you right away.

Thanks,
Tom Fassett

An update for anyone wishing to join the forum.

We now get hundreds of spammer requests to join every month. Many of these are obvious (with email addresses like fr54rfdecffr78rty@onlinesales.ru) but some spammers have gotten a bit more sneaky. Because of this we usually ignore requests with gmail or hotmail addresses as there are literally hundreds to go through. Unfortunately, since we would rather err on the side of caution rather than let a spammer in, some legitimate people slip through the cracks. I'm not sure what the answer is as I have also found that posting an email address for membership requests causes that address to get flooded by spammer requests within days. There are even newer programs spammers can use to read addresses that are "coded," (for instance "join at railroadforum dot com"). I know these "email mining" programs exist because I have received offers from programmers to sell them to me (spammers spamming potential spammers... angry.gif )
Obviously, the best way to join up is to know someone who is already a member as they can send us an internal message so we can immediately OK your membership.
A second possible way to stand out from the daily clutter of spammer requests is to ask for a user name that is railroad related and not quite so unique. For instance, we would be much less suspicious of something like "ohio railfan" as opposed to something nebulous like "rockstar123." A username can be easily changed after a person becomes a member. Since I have yet to see a spammer ask for a username with "railfan" in it, that would be a good code to use (for now--until they figure it out, then we'll come up with something else rolleyes.gif ).
I'll keep looking for a better way to make it easier for legitimate members to join up but in the meantime, try the suggestions above.

Thanks,
Tom F

We'll try this and see how it goes. If you would like to join the forum, please send an email to the following address:

I will change this periodically (or as soon as the spammers discover it).
