went over to Rail Shops web site to look at thier Carbon Black Covered Hopper kits the other day.
while nice they are a bit pricey [$35.00] if one wants a train of them.
but noticed on the side bar PRR H30 Kits !!
so clicked it of course, and behold a multi media kit for the PRR H30 series covered hoppers.
N&W also had a similar series,and a couple of Pennco's subsidaires
also ended up with a few later for loco sand and MOW services.
most of the car body is Injected Molded Styrene, but the End Braces and Ladders are Etched Brass !!!
very intresting approach to the thick end bars molding problems !!
this Kit has Jon Grant written all over it !!
these cars will really add Varity to a string of smallish Covered Cement hoppers !!
the listed price is $36.00,Funaro has a Resin Kit,and Brass versions have been offered on and off over the years.
try www.railshop.net if Your intrested.
now if You have been Waiting for the Cannonball Styrene kit the past 15 or 20 years, this may be the Kit You are waiting for !!?
Spikre
ps- it may be more like 25 years for the CCS kit !!
what ever did happen to these kits any way ??
they were showing test shots by 1988 at least !!

Thanks Bob, I forgot about this! Were these used for cement or ballast or what?

Paul,
the Carbon Black covered hoppers were only used for Carbon Black.
the PRR H30s are another story, think most heavier powders like Cement, roofing granules, sand, pebble blasting grits, salt, etc.
Ballast and Aggragrates would mainly be carried in open cars.
many H30s lasted past CR day, check some PRR Freight car books for more info.
