After being MIA for a few weeks, I've finally managed to get on the old Interweb to show what I've been up to.

I spent a few weeks detailing and weathering some modern-ish cars for Sweethome Alabama, namely some horribly-bright, as-new, Rail box cars. I rubbed down the symbol to almost nothing and repainted it by hand before applying various washes, powders and graffiti, using photos friom the web. Here's the results.

Jon,
the cars look good for the later 80s and early 90s.
in the early 80s they wouldnt have been that ragged looking,
what year is SHA again ?
but You are makeing me feel old,can recall when the RBOXs and ABOXs
were still new, shiney, and had paint smell.

Excellent job on the weathering Jon.

They sure look like the ones I get to see every now and again.

Depending on era.For the 70s/mid 80s those cars are over weathered.

Those cars would be ok for the mid90s to '10..

However,

I wouldn't want a freight yard full of rust buckets simply because-and based on my railfan observations-that would be unprototypical...

With that said..Very nice weathering! biggrin.gif

I'm modelling early-ish to late 1990s on SWA and working from actual photos of individual cars using 1990s photos where possible, although the vast majority of pics are from 2000 onwards.

Where I have a new freight car, I'll weather it accordingly - one of the hi-cube cars in the roster was only built recently and all the photos of it are clean-ish, so I'll have to up the date period when that runs on the layout.

Another weathering project was on a Sou 'green dot' boxcar, using acrylic washes and powder, with gel-pen and decal graffiti.

I've now set the modern stuff aside to work on the 1930's layout for an upcoming show.

Going back in time, I built my remaining resin kits - a Speedwitch Wabash Automobile boxcar and a few Westerfields. Not the greatest of photos but you get the idea.

Now for a few Tichy plastics.

Jon,
Speedwitch still has both of thier modeling books available,a bit Pricey,
but good for Pre-1940 cars,or 1950 rebuilds.
still need to locate a copy of #-2 for here.
waiting on the Tichy cars, hard to believe that the MTH PFE R-40 Wood Reefers
make assembling the Tichy kits Optional now !!
saw the MTH cars, and they do look rather nice, but not sure the paint was correct,
but next trip to the LHS to look them over closer had them Gone !!!
but unlike BLI N&W H-2/3 hoppers, think they are still available ??
missed the 24" lettering cars again !!!
